Benanti, Mitchell to emcee pre-televised ceremony

Laura Benanti and Brian Stokes Mitchell will host the Creative Arts Tony Awards, otherwise known as the nods handed out in the hour prior to the start of the CBS kudocast.

Tony winners Benanti (“Gypsy”) and Mitchell (“Kiss Me, Kate”) will emcee the pre-televised ceremony, to which many of the evening’s design awards are relegated.

Also said to be on the list for pre-broadcast this year are the awards for play revival, choreography and book of a musical. Dramatists Guild prexy Stephen Schwarz (“Wicked”) sent out a statement Thursday afternoon objecting to the decision regarding the book category.

Creative Arts seg runs from 7 to 8 p.m., when the three-hour televised portion, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, begins.
