Musical announces plans for tour

The creative and producing team behind bio-tuner “Louis and Keely: Live at the Sahara” has announced plans for a short national tour next year with the final goal of a Broadway berth in late 2010.

The show about the on- and offstage music between swing-era bandleader Louis Prima and singing sensation Keely Smith has been extended multiple times since opening in an expanded version March 19 at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

While that production is directed by Taylor Hackford and choreographed by Vernel Bagneris, Hackford will not be involved in the show’s ongoing incarnations. The performers and writers, Vanessa Claire Smith and Jake Broder, are working on a rewrite of the script that aims to make the piece feel less like a biopic, according to co-producer Sarabeth Schedeen.

An earlier version staged by Sacred Fools Theater Company won four Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards, including outstanding production, in March.
