Jude Law’s ‘Hamlet’ set for Broadway

Donmar Warehouse production heads to N.Y.

The Donmar Warehouse production of “Hamlet” toplined by Jude Law will make the transatlantic leap to Broadway this fall.

The production, which earned largely enthusiastic notices from the UK press, plays the Wyndham’s Theater on the West End through Aug. 22, then will have a brief stint in Elsinore — the Danish city that is the setting of the Shakespeare tragedy — before heading to Gotham for a September start date.

Law has not appeared on Broadway since his 1995 Rialto debut in “Indiscretions.” “Hamlet” joins a fall slate of star-driven plays including “Oleanna” with Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles; “Race” with James Spader; and the soon-to-be-confirmed “A Steady Rain” with Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig.

New York incarnation of “Hamlet” is produced by Arielle Tepper Madover, whose current Main Stem transfer of the Donmar’s “Mary Stuart” has struggled to attract auds without a movie-star name in the cast. That fate seems unlikely to befall “Hamlet” thanks to Law (“The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Closer”), whose upcoming pics include “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” and “Sherlock Holmes.”

Exactly how much of the Donmar cast will join Law in New York has not yet been nailed down. London production also stars Penelope Wilton as Gertrude, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ophelia and Kevin R. McNally as Claudius.

Broadway engagement, set for 12 weeks, begins previews Sept. 12 ahead of an Oct. 6 opening at the Broadhurst Theater.
