Hynes to helm ‘Equivocation’

Performances to begin in February

Garry Hynes has been tapped to helm Manhattan Theater Club’s Off Broadway production of “Equivocation,” set to begin perfs in February.

The work of Irish helmer Hynes, who picked up a 1998 Tony for her production of “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” has recently been seen in Gotham in Off Broadway stagings of “The Cripple of Inishmaan” and “Druid/Synge.” She also directed MTC’s 2007 revival of “Translations.”

Fictional narrative of “Equivocation,” set in 1605, centers on William Shakespeare, who is commissioned by the crown to pen a new work about the recently averted Gunpowder Plot. Bill Cain’s play bowed earlier this year at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in a production helmed by Bill Rauch.

“Equivocation” begins previews Feb. 9 ahead of a March 2 opening at MTC’s Off Broadway space, City Center Stage I.
