The Geffen Playhouse in L.A. has confirmed details of its early 2010 sked, including new casting for the Annette Bening topliner “The Female of the Species” and, at the org’s smaller space, Ed Harris reprising his turn in Neil LaBute’s solo play “Wrecks.”
David Arquette, Julian Sands, Mireille Enos (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”), Merritt Wever (“Nurse Jackie”) and Josh Stamberg (“Drop Dead Diva”) have signed on to “Species,” in which Bening stars as a feminist author grappling with a number of visitors while she tries to work on her next book.
Joanna Murray-Smith’s play has previously been seen in its 2006 Melbourne preem and in a 2008 West End run. Geffen a.d. Randall Arney helms the U.S. preem of the show, which begins previews Feb. 2 ahead of a Feb. 10 opening on the theater’s mainstage.
Meanwhile, in the Geffen’s smaller space, the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater, Harris returns to “Wrecks” after appearing in the show both in Ireland in 2005 and at New York’s Public Theater in 2006. LaBute helms his own play, a monologue centered on a used-car salesman whose wife has recently died.
The limited run in L.A. runs Feb. 4-March 7, with an official press opening skedded for Feb. 7.
