‘Geeks’ gets workshop

Musical to be developed at Goodspeed

“Band Geeks!” — a new musical about high school marching bands and the group of misfits and wannabes that surround them — will get a workshop production at Goodspeed Musicals’ Norma Terris Theater in Chester, Conn., May 13-June 6.

Tuner has a book by Tommy Newman and Gordon Greenberg; music by Mark Allen, Gaby Alter and Newman; and lyrics by Alter and Newman. Concept is by Newman.

Greenberg, who staged “Pirates of Penzance,” “Happy Days” and “Half a Sixpence” at the Goodspeed Opera House, will direct the show, developed in a staged reading last January at Goodspeed Musicals’ Festival of New Artists.

Tuner also was presented in September at the National Alliance of Musical Theater Festival of New Musicals in New York.

Prior to the Goodspeed workshop, “Band Geeks!” will receive a full nonprofessional production with students from the Music Theater Program at the Hartt School at the U. of Hartford in West Hartford, Conn., starting Dec. 10. Hartt students were involved in the show’s development in January at the Goodspeed festival and throughout the year.
