'Spring' star set for Green Day musical
John Gallagher Jr., who picked up a 2007 Tony for his role in “Spring Awakening,” will topline the Green Day tuner “American Idiot.”
The cast of the punk opera, which bows at Berkeley Rep next month, will include Tony Vincent (“Jesus Christ Superstar”), Rebecca Naomi Jones (“Passing Strange”), Michael Esper (“The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide …”), Matt Caplan (“South Pacific”) and Mary Faber (“Avenue Q”) in an ensemble of 19.
Storyline of the show is based on the 2004 Green Day album, about an American everykid (Gallagher), his drug-dealing alter ego (Vincent) and his anarchist girlfriend (Jones).
Gallagher, who has been said to be attached to the project for several months now, joins a growing group of “Spring Awakening” alums already working on “Idiot,” including helmer Michael Mayer and commercial producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman. Music is credited to Green Day, with lyrics by band frontman Billie Joe Armstrong.
“Idiot” will play Berkeley Sept. 4-Oct. 11. Although the project seems a likely candidate for future life in Gotham, no plan yet has been confirmed.
