Zaks, Nicholaw and Bruni do semi-staged projects

Helmers Jerry Zaks, Casey Nicholaw and Marc Bruni have been tapped to direct the upcoming offerings of the 2009-10 Encores! series of semi-staged musicals.

Zaks (“Guys and Dolls”) will helm “Girl Crazy,” the 1930 George and Ira Gershwin tuner about a New Yorker stuck in a desolate little town in the American West. Show kicks off the Encores! season with a run skedded for Nov. 19-22.

Bruni, who will direct “Ordinary Days” at the Roundabout Underground this fall, will helm the Encores! edition of “Fanny,” the 1954 musical based on a trilogy of Marcel Pagnol plays about a love triangle. Tuner runs Feb. 4-7.

Nicholaw (“The Drowsy Chaperone”), who directed the Encores! staging of Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies” in 2007, will stage Sondheim and Arthur Laurents’ 1964 musical “Anyone Can Whistle.” The satire of the 1960s cultural landscape will play April 8-11.

The annual Encores! series of semi-staged musical revivals has yielded a regular crop of Broadway transfers, including “Chicago,” “Wonderful Town” and this fall’s production of “Finian’s Rainbow.” The summertime edition of the series originated the recent Tony-winning revival of “Gypsy.”
