Stage vet picks up Presidential Medal of Freedom

Chita Rivera will pick up a Presidential Medal of Freedom later this month, one of 16 recipients of the award that honors contributions to world peace, culture and other U.S. interests.

Sidney Poitier, Desmond Tutu, Stephen Hawking, Sandra Day O’Connor, Billie Jean King and the late Harvey Milk are among those named by the White House for the 2009 honors.

Broadway fave Rivera (“Kiss of the Spider Woman,” “Chicago,” “West Side Story”) will accept the medal, along with the other honorees, from President Obama at a White House ceremony Aug. 12.
