Laura Benanti will follow her recent Tony-winning perf in “Gypsy” by toplining the Public Theater’s Off Broadway staging of Christopher Durang’s new comedy, “Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them.”
Benanti (“The Wedding Singer,” “Nine”) will play Felicity, a young woman who becomes concerned that her new husband is a terrorist. Richard Poe has been cast as Felicity’s father, whose activities as a butterfly collector may mask a sinister agenda.
Benanti, Poe and Audrie Neenan join a previously announced ensemble that includes Amir Arison as Felicity’s husband and Kristine Nielsen as her legit-loving mother.
Helmed by Nicholas Martin (“Butley”), “Torture” begins previews March 24 ahead of an April 6 opening.
