CTG sets Kron, Gurira plays

Malcolm McDowell set for Kirk Douglas

Center Theater Group’s 2009-10 season at the Kirk Douglas Theater includes new plays by Lisa Kron (“Well”) and Danai Gurira (“In the Continuum”), as well as a U.S. preem starring Malcolm McDowell.

Season kicks off with Gurira’s “Eclipsed,” which follows a group of women during the Liberian civil war in 2003. Robert O’Hara directs the L.A. production, which runs Sept. 13-Oct. 18 following a world preem staging at Woolly Mammoth Theater in D.C. later this summer.

Currently untitled Kron play is a co-production with Berkeley Rep, which will produce the play later in the season. Set in 2000, the plot follows a Thanksgiving dinner hosted by a woman who is more concerned with the contested presidential election.

Leigh Silverman helms the show, playing March 21-April 18 at the Douglas before moving on to a Berkeley engagement.

McDowell plays Brit theater critic Kenneth Tynan in “Tynan,” adapted by Richard Nelson and Colin Chambers from the scribe’s diaries (which were edited by John Lahr). Nelson directs the show, set to play May 6-June 6.

Also on tap at the Douglas are a workshop of “Next Stop Amazingland,” from the creators of “All Wear Bowlers”; a cabaret called “The Lunacy Commission”; and the world preem of Dael Orlandersmith’s “Bones.”
