Croatia’s biggest annual cultural event, the Zagreb Film Festival, will celebrate the work of British producers Mike Downey and Sam Taylor with its first-ever retrospective in October.
Fest director Boris Matic said the pair’s London production company Film and Music Entertainment had nurtured much new talent in the 34 films produced since the company was set up eight years ago.
Many of F&ME’s films have been shot in Croatia and other Balkans or central European countries and half of them have been by debut directors — which is the Zagreb festival’s specialty mandate.
The retrospective will include Michael J. Basset’s WWI horror thriller “Deathwatch,” shot in the Czech republic; “Turtle: The Incredible Jounrey” a doc narrated by Miranda Richardson and directed by Nick Stringer; and “Under the Stars,” shot in Cyprus and directed by Christos Georgiu.
The Croatian premiere of Dominic Murphy’s Sundance and Berlin hit “White Lightnin’ ” — a debut that used Zagreb and region to double for West Virigina, will also screen in a gala out of competition event.
