The Tribeca Film Institute has announced the recipients of the 2009 Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund, a series of seven grants totaling $100,000. Funds were awarded by a jury consisting of Dan Cogan, Abigail Disney, Philip Gourevitch, Julia Ormond and Sam Pollard.
Recipient pics are Rob Lemkin and S. Thet’s “Enemies of the People,” exec produced by Sandra Whipham; Elinyisia Mosha’s “Anatomy of Poverty”; Beth Murphy’s “The Promise of Freedom,” co-produced by Sean Flynn with Murphy; Gemma Atwal’s “Marathon Boy”; Rebecca Haimowitz and Vaishali Sinha’s “Made in India”; Jyllian Gunther’s “Growing Small,” exec produced by Jack Lechner; and Jairo Eduardo Carillo’s “Born Under Fire.”
Jury selected projects that promote social change and illuminate issues they felt were in need of deeper coverage. “Enemies” follows a journalist orphaned by the Khmer Rouge who sets out to learn more about his parents’ deaths in particular and genocide in general, while “Freedom” tracks a young American trying to save Iraqis who worked for the U.S. from violent reprisals.
