Sundance goes national with USA event

Screenings to take place in eight screenings during fest

In a move to broaden its profile, Sundance Institute has tapped the eight films for its inaugural Sundance Film Festival USA, its Jan. 28 event hosting screenings in eight cities midway through the Park City festival.

The initiative, announced last month, will dispatch filmmakers and their films from the festival to screenings at local arthouses, followed by live conversation with the filmmakers.

Films screening are “Cyrus” at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, Mich., with Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass; “The Company Men” at the Coolidge Corner in Brookline, Mass., with John Wells; “Daddy Longlegs at BAM in Brooklyn, with Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie; “Jack Goes Boating” at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Bob Glaudini; “Teenage Paparazzo” at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles with Adrian Grenier; “The Runaways” at the Sundance Cinemas Madison in Madison, Wis., with Floria Sigismondi; “The Extra Man” at The Belcourt Theatre in Nashville with Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini; “Howl” at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas in San Francisco with Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.

An introductory video featuring Robert Redford and festival highlights will precede the screenings.

Sundance noted that most of these artists have a previous connection to Sundance, either as advisors to the institute’s labs or as participants in past festivals.
