Extra worked on films 'The Good Earth,' 'Ninotchka'

Jewell Jordan Mason, who was Luise Rainer’s stunt double in “The Good Earth” and Merle Oberon’s for “Wuthering Heights,” died Sept. 24 in Camarillo, Calif. She was 92.

She started as a child extra at MGM at the age of 8 and worked as an extra, double and stunt double during the 1930s and 1940s on films including “Ninotchka” and “Destry Rides Again.”

During the course of her career, Mason suffered numerous injuries, including broken ribs; a dislocated shoulder; and hip, wrist and back injuries at a time when there was no medical insurance coverage for such performers.

Her career as a stuntwoman will be featured in Mollie Gregory’s upcoming book, “The Stuntwomen,” to be published next year.

Mason is survived by a daughter, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter, two sisters and her niece, producer Gale Anne Hurd.
