Streep cooks up interest as Julia Child

'Julie and Julia' actress vies for 16th Oscar nom

Meryl Streep may have all of the right ingredients to cook up a 16th Oscar nomination after starring as the chef extraordinaire in “Julie and Julia.”

An impromptu imitation of Julia Child’s accent and mannerisms convinced screenwriter and director Nora Ephron to add Streep to the recipe. Critics and auds also ate up the characterization, as the pic became the third summertime box office hit recently for Streep (the others being “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mamma Mia!”).

Still, channeling Child would prove to be a stretch — by about 8 inches. The chef was 6-foot-2, and it took high heels, risers, camera angles and other tricks to help the 5-foot-6 actress become a towering presence over her co-stars, including Stanley Tucci as Child’s supportive husband.

After an Oscar nomination for last year’s “Doubt,” if tapped again for “J&J,” it would be the fifth time Streep has scored Oscar bids in consecutive years during her career. Her last win was in 1983 for “Sophie’s Choice,” which was sandwiched in between noms for “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” and “Silkwood.”

“Julie and Julia” was the first course in a 2009 cinematic feast for Streep. She also provided the voice for the wife of the title character in the animated “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and is part of a love triangle with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin in the Christmas Day release “It’s Complicated.”

Streep said earlier this summer she feels fortunate to still be working “and to have people touched by my work … and it makes them laugh, or feel better, or think something that they didn’t think about before. That’s really a wonderful thing.”
