Specialty pics set to bow

Will adults trek to specialty pics?

Several high-profile specialty films make their debut at the domestic box office this weekend, hoping to grab the attention of adults looking for an alternative to Paramount’s summer tentpole “Star Trek.”

Sony Pictures Classics unspools two titles today: Carlos Cuaron’s soccer-themed buddy comedy “Rudo y Cursi” and Atom Egoyan’s “Adoration.”

“Rudo y Cursi,” which marks Cuaron’s directorial debut, reunites Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal for the first time since “Y tu mama tambien.” “Rudo” was produced by Cha Cha Cha Films, the shingle formed by Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu.

“Rudo,” which opens in 70 runs in the U.S., opened in December in Mexico and has become one of the top local films there.

The specialty box office has been struggling in recent weeks, and indie film execs are hoping that “Rudo” will help shake off the doldrums.

“Adoration” opens in New York and Los Angeles. Film made its premiere a year ago at the Cannes Film Festival. Other specialty openers this weekend include Kirby Dick’s docu “Outrage,” which focuses on closeted gay politicians who promote anti-gay legislation. Politicos profiled in Dick’s film include Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, California Congressman David Drier and former New York Mayor Ed Koch.

Magnolia opens “Outrage” –Dick’s follow-up to “This Film Is Not Yet Rated” — in five theaters in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Magnolia also goes out this weekend with Tilda Swinton starrer “Julia,” which unspools in three theaters in New York and L.A.

Screen Media Films opens Billy Zane-Amy Smart dancing drama “Love N’ Dancing” in 30 runs.

Regent Releasing’s “Little Ashes,” which explores the relationship between Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca, opens in 12 theaters.

On the commercial side, “Star Trek” plays in 3,849 runs, including Imax locations. J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the classic sci-fi franchise opened Thursday at 7 p.m. in the U.S. Film is opening day and date around the globe, save Japan and Mexico.

“Star Trek” is the second summer tentpole, after 20th Century Fox’s “X Men Origins: Wolverine,” which opened last weekend to $85 million domestically. “Wolverine” was expected to jump the $100 million mark domestically Thursday night.

After “Star Trek,” the frame’s only other wide release is Summit Entertainment’s urban comedy “Next Day Air,” which goes out in 1,138 runs. Film stars Dante “Mos Def” Smith, Mike Epps, Donald Faison and Lauren London.

Summit has modest expectations for the film, which was a negative pickup. It is tracking strongest among African-American and Hispanic males.
