'Indiana Jones' was top grossing films in 2008

MADRID — Total box office in Spain fell 4% last year in local Euro currency terms to Euros 610 million ($822.3 million).

Cinema admissions plunged 8% to 104.7 million, according to Nielsen EDI.

The U.S. dollar’s late year rally against the Euro will only dent Spain’s B.O. further in dollar terms.

On the upside for Hollywood, U.S movies dominated Spanish cinemagoing in 2008.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Culture, through Nov. 15, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” was the highest-grossing film in Spain last year, taking $28 million.

Beyond “Indie,” Universal Pictures Intl., which distributes Universal and Paramount in Spain, had three other high-ranking films in Spain’s 2008 top 10 through mid-November: “Kung Fu Panda” ($18.3 million), “Mamma Mia!” ($17.8 million) and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” ($16.3 million).
