Sneak peeks excite exhibitors
LAS VEGAS — It was Sony’s turn at ShoWest on Wednesday, as worldwide distribution president Rory Bruer unveiled extended footage of the studio’s summer slate. The low-key sesh featured no stars or 3-D pyrotechnics, just an old-fashioned reel of upcoming pics. Leading the charge was tentpole hopeful “Angels and Demons,” director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks’ follow-up to “The Da Vinci Code.” Next up was helmer Robert Luketic’s “The Ugly Truth,” a romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler that got big laughs after two very randy scenes. Two very different titles elicited the morning’s best responses. The confab aud really got into Meryl Streep as Julia Child in the Nora Ephron comedy “Julie and Julia,” and they perked up and even cheered at “District 9,” an intense sci-fi pic produced by Peter Jackson. Rounding out the clips were “Year One,” Harold Ramis’ take on prehistoric times, and Tony Scott’s “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” a remake of the hostage drama starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.
