‘Sea Level’ takes Prague fest prize

Gianfranco Rosi documentary nabs top award

PRAGUE — Prague’s One World fest, Europe’s principal film event dedicated to honoring human rights, conferred its top kudo Thursday on “Below Sea Level,” Gianfranco Rosi’s docu on California/Mexican border life.

Fest, launched 11 years ago with the help of the Czech icon for human rights, ex-president Vaclav Havel, also named Jana Sevcikova best director for “Gyumri,” an exploration of how Armenian earthquake survivors fight to hang on.

Jury prizes went to Lebanon docu on war survivor “The One Man Village,” and Brazilian slumdog story “Because We Were Born” and “The Sari Soldiers,” an account of women revolutionaries in Nepal.

Rudolf Vrba Right to Know prize went to “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” an account of Liberian women taking on corruption and war.

Opening pic, “Burma VJ,” a docu on covert reporting in the locked down Southeast Asian country, scored the Vaclav Havel Award for most significant contribution to human rights awareness.
