Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar party
Scott Campbell wants every guest at the 17th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party to have a fabulous time — as long as they’re mindful of the real reason they’re there.“It’s great that we’re celebrating Hollywood,” says the foundation’s executive director. “But the focus is and always will be raising money for the issues of AIDS.” Campbell and his staff of 10 (“We’ve really worked this event into a well-oiled machine”) spend three months working out the logistics for the big night, where this year they’ll have 650 guests for a sit-down dinner at the Pacific Design Center. While John and David Furnish preside over the party on Oscar night, Campbell works tirelessly all year behind the scenes to line up sponsors and make sure the event brings in the bucks needed to fund the foundation’s projects. For Campbell, the evening usually wraps around 2 a.m. The next morning, it’s back to business as usual. “There’s no time to recover. We have to move on to the next thing,” he says. “Particularly this year, there’s a lot of work to do.”
