Film wins Panavision Spirit Award at fest
“Poppy Shakespeare” won the Panavision Spirit Award at the Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival on Sunday. Pic about the friendship between two patients at a mental hospital was directed by Benjamin Ross. Prize includes a camera package worth $60,000.Aud prize went to South African pic “Skin,” starring Sophie Okenedo, while “A Woman in Berlin,” directed by Max Farberbock, took the international trophy. Spanish-language film prize went to Fernando Lebrija’s “Amar a morir” from Mexico and the Eastern Block kudo to Kazakhstan’s “Tulpan.” Other prizes went to doc “Yes Madam, Sir,” for which Megan Doneman collected the Social Justice Award, which included $2,500; Sam Taylor-Wood’s live-action short “Love You More”; and animated short “This Way Up.” Fest, which opened Jan. 22, closed Sunday with the world preem of Jeff Balsmeyer’s “The Lightbulb.”
