Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz attend event
SANTA BARBARA — The Santa Barbara Film Fest kicked off in style with tributes to a pair of Oscar nominees — Kate Winslet and Penelope Cruz.
Interviewed by Leonard Maltin on Jan. 23 at the Arlington Theater, Winslet was beset by giggles as she watched herself embrace Leonardo DiCaprio in a steamy scene from “Titanic.” “What are we doing there?” she laughed. “Leo and I just look so little.”
Bill Nighy presented Winslet with her award noting, “There are a few things that move me to patriotism: the Rolling Stones, David Beckham — and Kate Winslet.”
The next night, Cruz took home the Performer of the Year Award for “Elegy” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” presented by Josh Brolin.
The fest continued through the week with a panel discussion Monday between helmer Danny Boyle and the fest’s executive director Roger Durling followed by Tuesday’s presentation of the Cinema Vanguard Award to Kristin Scott Thomas.
