Producer to head movie market

ROME — The Rome Film Festival has tapped Italian producer Roberto Cicutto to head its budding movie mart and upped film journo Piera Detassis to artistic director.

Cicutto, who is widely respected on the international film circuit, is a member of the European Film Academy. His copious production credits include Ermanno Olmi’s “Legend of the Holy Drinker” and, more recently, Spike Lee’s “Miracle at St. Anna.”

As Rome market topper, Cicutto replaces Giorgio Gosetti and Teresa Cavina, both of whom stepped down last year following differences with new fest prexy Gianluigi Rondi.

Cicutto will manage the heavily indie-oriented movie mart, formerly headed by Gosetti, and also its international projects lab, which was run by Cavina.

Detassis, who took on a prominent role this past edition when she was promoted to artistic co-ordinator, has now formally become the Rome fest’s artistic topper, although critic Mario Sesti remains in charge of its cutting-edge L’Altro Cinema section, and Gianluca Giannelli still heads the Alice in the City kiddie component.

Rome’s fourth edition, which will operate on a tighter budget, will run Oct. 15-23.
