Roadside pacts for Chris Rock’s ‘Hair’

Company, Liddell take world rights

Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment bought world rights to “Good Hair,” the HBO Films documentary about African American hair culture that Chris Rock co-wrote, produced and starred in.

Pic made its world premiere at Sundance, where it won the Special Jury Prize: Documentary. Roadside will release the film domestically in the fall.

Rock developed the film after one of his daughters, in tears, asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?”

Docu was directed by Jeff Stilson, a writer and co-producer of HBO’s “The Chris Rock Show,” and Rock shares follicle recollections with Maya Angelou, Nia Long, Raven Symone, Ice-T and the Rev. Al Sharpton. Stories of how hairstyles impacted their lives and self-esteem helped Rock formulate an answer to his daughter’s question.

Film deal was brokered by ICM was made by Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions, Liddell Entertainment’s Mickey Liddell and Michael Lombardo, HBO president of programming group and West Coast operations.

Lionsgate will handle homevideo and other domestically ancillary rights. HBO retains pay cable rights.
