Mexico sets dates for Fox tentpoles

'Wolverine' to open May 9, 'Museum' June 12

Fox announced new Mexico release dates Friday for its summer tentpoles “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” with restrictions on theater capacity due to the flu outbreak still in effect.

“Wolverine” will now open May 29, with “Museum” following on June 12.

Release date is the third for “Wolverine.” Pic was originally set to bow April 28, but theater closures to prevent the spread of swine flu pushed execs to move the date to May 15.

They bumped the pic again, likely because of the government’s health safety measure that orders exhibs to space ticket holders a minimum of seven feet apart in all directions.

With some industry execs talking about the measure cutting capacity to 20%, many studios decided to hold major releases.

By most accounts in the media, restrictions will likely be lifted in a week or two.

Exhib Cinepolis’ Mexico City regional director Carlos Wolf Perez said, “Highly anticipated films like ‘Wolverine’ or ‘Night at the Museum’ can draw a lot of people. This is why we hope the health secretary drops the restrictions next week.”

In any event, as one National Film Chamber rep explained, “People are taking their time getting back into theaters, and it will be a little while yet before high demand for tickets returns.”
