Mandate sets up Rough House

Trio cue high-concept comedies

Making a move into comedy, Mandate Pictures has set up Rough House Pictures with Danny McBride, “Pineapple Express” director David Gordon Green, Jody Hill and Matt Reilly, who’s departing Warner Bros.

Mandate has a two-year first-look deal with Rough House to produce high-concept comedies.

“Our aim is to bust out with a slate of comedy projects that are a little left of center, but our target is the bull’s-eye,” Green said. “Danny and Jody and I have been making movies with our friends since we were in college together. Rough House is an opportunity to expand the family and the ambition.”

Reilly will be segueing from his current post as VP of production at Warners to join Rough House as head of production and will be a participant in the business. While at the studio, Reilly collaborated with writer-director Hill and McBride on “Observe and Report.”

The moniker for the banner comes from Green’s first short film, “Will You Lather Up My Rough House?”

Hill, Green and McBride all went to the North Carolina School of the Arts and lived on the same dorm floor during their first year. McBride was the second unit director on Green’s feature debut, “George Washington”; had a supporting role in Green’s next film, “All the Real Girls”; and co-wrote with Hill “The Foot Fist Way,” in which McBride starred.

McBride is currently starring in HBO’s “Eastbound and Down,” which he and Hill co-created, co-write and produce together. Hill directed the pilot and final episode of the first season. Green has also directed episodes. And Green’s film “Your Highness,” starring McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman, recently wrapped production in Northern Ireland and is slated for an October release by Universal.
