ROME — The Locarno Film Festival is strengthening its Asian ties by pacting with the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), where many pics from the area germinate.
Aiming to foster a tighter rapport between the Asian industry and Western producers, the prominent indie-driven Swiss event is launching the 2009 Open Doors HAF Awards in tandem with the project mart of the upcoming Hong Kong Film Festival.
The joint nod will give two film projects presented this year at HAF that hail from mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan slots at Locarno’s Open Doors Factory co-production workshop, dedicated this year to Greater China.
Producers and directors of the projects will be invited to attend Locarno.
Open Doors HAF prizewinners will be announced on Wednesday, the first day of the three-day forum.
Also attesting to Locarno’s Asian accent is its massive Manga Impact retro celebrating Japanese anime toons, organized in tandem with Italy’s national film museum.
The 62nd edition of the fest, located in the Italian-speaking section of Switzerland, will run Aug. 5 to Aug. 15.
