Kirk Ellis to adapt ‘Papa Hemingway’

Memoir focuses on author's last 14 years

Kirk Ellis has been tapped to adapt the bestselling Ernest Hemingway memoir “Papa Hemingway” by A.E. Hotchner.

The Gotham Group has partnered with independent producer Kevin Fortuna to bring the work to the bigscreen.

Hotchner’s memoir about the last 14 years of Hemingway’s life focuses on the literary giant’s close friendship with Hotchner. The author just recently agreed to sell the film rights to the highly personal memoir.

Gotham’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Peter McHugh will produce alongside Fortuna.

Ellis, best known for adapting David McCullough’s tome “John Adams” for HBO, is continuing his association with McCullough and the American Revolution on his next project for the cabler, “1776.” Like “John Adams,” the miniseries will be produced with Tom Hanks’ Playtone.

In addition Ellis is adapting James Ellroy’s novel “American Tabloid” as a potential series for Playtone and HBO. He is also working on “Blood and Thunder,” a drama about Kit Carson and the Navajo Wars for DreamWorks.
