Exec uses Hollywood biz models to create company
BEIJING — Sometimes your first love is the one that sticks in your memory. For John Chong, chief executive officer of Media Asia Group, his favorite Media Asia pic is the 1994 title that launched the group, “I Have a Date With Spring.”Chong is a producer in the old Hong Kong mold, like you used to see in the old Shaw Brothers days or in Bruce Lee’s or Jackie Chan’s heyday. He has lived his life in the Hong Kong entertainment biz, starting at Television Broadcasts (TVB), Hong Kong’s premier pubcaster, while also penning lyrics for Hong Kong Cantopop warblers. While at the satellite network Star TV, he and six partners got together to form Media Asia. They became the “Seven Samurai” and the rest is history. He studied Hollywood’s approach to cost management, and his pics have often done boffo B.O. on very tight budgets.
