Vogue documentary secures pickup

NEW YORK — “The September Issue,” R.J. Cutler’s documentary about Vogue editor Anna Wintour, has secured a pickup from Roadside Attractions.

The distrib took domestic theatrical and homevid rights on the A&E IndieFilms-produced doc, which had a strong preem in competition at Sundance. A&E will have the TV debut after theatrical and homevid windows.

Cutler adapted tactics he used on Bill Clinton docu “The War Room” to depict Wintour and the fashion world’s intrigue-heavy process of pulling together Vogue’s September issue. He secured significant cooperation from the famously secretive Wintour.

Reviews of Cutler’s pic were largely positive, and Wintour even hit Utah to appear at a Q&A. Once it unspooled at the fest, several buyers circled the pic. It won a cinematography prize from the jury.

Roadside is a regular player in the doc world, having released pics including “I.O.U.S.A.” and “Super Size Me.”

“Because R.J. turns the process of assembling a high-profile magazine into a kind of suspense thriller, we think this film is such a great bet for theatrical,” said Roadside co-president Howard Cohen. “Fashion lovers all want to know what the legendary Anna Wintour is really like.”
