Forum to take place March 25-27

HONG KONG – Directors of several of Asia’s biggest indie hits from 2008 will line up their next projects at the upcoming Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) in March (25-27.)

Star newcomers include Korea’s Na Hong-jin (second ref: Na) (“The Chaser”) and Taiwan’s Wei Te-Sheng (second ref: Wei), fresh off his boffo “Cape No.7.” Others with recent hits include “Beast Stalker’s” Dante Lam and “Crazy Stone” helmer Ning Hao.

Announced Monday, the 27-title lineup for the project market arm of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) is decidedly Asian-centric, with only one project from further afield, Australian director Murali Thalluri’s “Jewel.”

“This year’s selection reaffirms HAF’s commitment to finding common ground between what is considered an art house film and a commercial one,” said LA-based producer Tim Kwok, a member of HAF’s Reading Committee.

Line-up also includes Japanese art-house favorite Naomi Kawase, Taiwan’s Cheng Tso-chi and a trio of the upcoming generation of Filipino helmers Brillante Mendoza, Francis Xavier Pasion and Adolfo J. Alix.

Na will present his second movie, thriller “The Murderer,” while Wei will be fielding meetings for his period drama “Seedig Bale.” Pic, an epic account of a 1930s uprising by indigenous Taiwanese tribesmen against Japanese colonialists and their subsequent massacre, has been a long time pet project for the director. In 2004, Wei shot a NT$2 million ($61,000) five-minute trailer for the film, in the hopes of interesting financiers. “Cape” has grossed upwards of NT460 million ($13.8 million) at the Taiwanese box office so far.
