20th installment to be released Dec. 26
TOKYO — Movie studio Shochiku’s 21-year film franchise “Diary of a Fishing Fool” (Tsuri baka nisshi) will end after its 20th installment is released Dec. 26.
The series, based on a popular comicbook about an angling-mad man and his boss, who’s not so competent at the sport, launched in 1988.
The series, which has been a steady moneymaker for Shochiku, has come to a halt less because of fading box office than because of the advancing age of stars Toshiyuki Nishida, 61, and Rentaro Mikuni, 86.
Shochiku has no plans to replace them.
The studio’s all-time record holder is the “Tora-san” comedy franchise, about a peddler who is forever falling in love but never gets the girl. The series racked up 48 installments between 1969 and 1996.
