Universal pic still tops overseas
“Fast and Furious” remained in the driver’s seat at the foreign box office, winning its third straight weekend with $15.2 million at 6,340 playdates in 59 markets — all of it from holdover business.Uni’s actioner posted its top takes in its second frames in Australia with $2.2 million, off 63%, and Italy with $1.8 million, down 65%. Its third British session scored $1.7 million, finishing second behind the launch for “State of Play.” Underlining the international appetite for action vehicles, “Fast and Furious” has cumed $170 million, or $25 million more than the domestic cume. It’s by far the top offshore grosser so far this year, leading “Monster Vs Aliens” by $27 million, and has five more territories to launch including Japan. Par’s “Monsters Vs Aliens” continued to tap into family coin with $11.2 million at 6,667 in 59 markets, led by $1.5 million in its fourth Brit frame. South Korea launched with $1.1 million. With $143 million overseas and $174.8 million domestically, “Monsters Vs Aliens” has cumed $317 million worldwide. Distribs mostly held back launches with “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” due to go day and date into most major markets next weekend. Domestic leader “Obsessed” won’t go into foreign markets until next month. Zac Efron’s “17 Again” continued to score respectably overseas with $6.8 million at 1,417 in 17 markets for a cume of $27.5 million early in its run — half of that from three weeks in the U.K. The laffer’s French launch scored second with $2.68 million. “State of Play,” also early in its international run, took in $3.6 million at 782 in five territories for a foreign cume of $6.1 million. It scored a decent $2.4 million debut in U.K., home of the series that’s the basis for the film, and declined 39% in Spain to $1.1 million. “Play” expands into eight markets next weekend including Greece, Italy, South Korea and Sweden. “Gran Torino” picked up $3.3 million at 2,170 in 49 territories to take the foreign cume to $99.1 million. The Clint Eastwood drama has performed solidly outside the United States and trails only “Fast and Furious,” “Monsters Vs Aliens” and “Valkyrie” among 2009 titles. Disney’s “Race to Witch Mountain” took in $3.1 million at 2,538 in 31 markets to lift its foreign cume to $29.6 million. The Mouse House also opened “Earth” in Italy with $298,000 at 70. Disney’s docu already saw major success in Germany with $33.2 million and overall foreign grosses have topped $85 million.
