Frederic Boyer will head up Cannes sidebar

Cannes Directors’ Fortnight announced Wednesday that Frederic Boyer will replace Olivier Pere as artistic director of the sidebar, which runs from May 14-24 and presents 24 features in parallel to the Official Selection.

Boyer has been a member of the Directors’ Fortnight selection committee since Pere took over in 2004. Pere is stepping down after his six-year stint to head the Locarno Film Festival. He will begin prepping the 2010 edition this fall.

Boyer programmed the Scandinavian, Eastern European and Anglophone selections in Directors’ Fortnight and has served on the juries of numerous fests, including Bratislava and Sarajevo.

He also is the founder of Paris’ Videosphere, one of Europe’s largest and most diversified video stores.

Referring to his Locarno gig, Pere told Daily Variety, “It’s the first time that a Frenchman will be running Locarno. Like the Fortnight, it’s a fest filled with discoveries of independent and arthouse films, only on a greater scope.”
