‘Clueless’ film cues parents

Docu takes on media influence on kids

Producer Mike Tollin, director Bill Couturie and Stacey Snider are teaming on the documentary “Clueless,” which looks at the all-consuming media world inhabited by kids today.

Film is being made in association with Common Sense Media, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the impact of media and entertainment on kids and families. Jim Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, will be one of the docu’s central figures.

Lensing is under way in various locations around the country.

“The film’s title is derived from the fact that even the most hands-on, involved parents are generally clueless about their kids’ media activities,” Tollin said.

He cited the phenomenon of sending sexy text messages known as sexting. “There’s been a lot of info in the media on sexting, saying one in five teens are sexting. But do one in five parents know that?” asked Tollin, who is best known for producing such sports-themed pics as “Coach Carter” and “Varsity Blues.” “It’s not about coming down on the kids. It’s about getting informed.”

Couturie added: “Kids are natives in this brave new world. We parents are just tourists, passing through. But if we don’t get directions, we’re going to get lost.”

John Fisher and Snider are exec producing. Despite Snider’s involvement, “Clueless” is not a DreamWorks project and is being independently financed. The filmmakers are eyeing a theatrical release in early 2010.

According to Snider, the film will feature several kids of various ages and their parents “showing how the Internet, social networking and texting have completely reshaped the dynamics of growing up in this country.”
