Warner Bros’ co-production of Bollywood actioner “Chandni Chowk to China” has launched with $6.8 million at 1,319 playdates in India and $625,000 at 130 in North America as part of a day-and-date launch in 30 markets worldwide.
The debut represented the studio’s widest-ever release for a Bollywood film in both India and North America, where several locations are playing a Hindi film for the first time.
Warner said the launch in India was “excellent” with 4.9 million admissions including previews. Five Bollywood films surpassed $20 million in cumes in India last year while the best recent performer among Hollywood films has been “Spider-Man 3” with $16 million.
In the U.K., “Chandni” grossed $407,000 at 61.
The pic was shot in India, Thailand and China and stars Akshay Kumar as a cook from the Delhi neighborhood of Chandni Chowk. It’s an R.S.E. People Tree Films production, produced by Ramesh Sippy.
