'If I Were You 2' nabs opening weekend crown
RIO DE JANEIRO — Helmer Daniel Filho’s comedy sequel “If I Were You 2” has broken Brazil’s record for opening weekend box office for a local pic.
The Fox-distribbed pic grossed 5.6 million reals ($2.5 million) on 309 screens Jan. 2-4, beating previous record holder “Carandiru,” which took $1.5 million in 2003, and almost doubling the $1.3 million haul for the first “If I Were You” in 2006.
“We were aware of the film’s potential, but we did not expect this box office landslide,” said producer Iafa Britz.
She is a partner in Total Filmes, which teamed up on the pic with Fox, Filho’s Lereby Prods. and local media giant Globo’s theatrical arm Globo Films.
“If I Were You 2” stars Tony Ramos and Gloria Pires as the quarelling couple who again temporarily switch bodies, due to an astrological phenomenon, which allows them to understand each other better.
