'Gomorrah,' 'Persepolis' among titles

LONDON — “Gomorrah,” “Persepolis,” “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” “The Orphanage” and “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” are the five nominees for the sixth edition of the BBC Four World Cinema Award, which will be dished out Jan. 27.

The noms were whittled down by a specialist jury from a list of more than 150 titles put forward by more than 200 U.K. critics.

Werner Herzog will receive the inaugural BBC Four World Cinema Achievement Award. To celebrate the maverick helmer, BBC Four will broadcast a season of four of his best-known films: “Aguirre Wrath of God,” “Fitzcarraldo,” “The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser” and “Nosferatu the Vampyre.”

The ceremony, which will be hosted by controversial TV presenter Jonathan Ross, will be broadcast on BBC Four on Jan. 31.
