Art Directors Guild unveils nominees

'Button,' 'Doubt,' 'Torino' among contenders

The Art Directors Guild likes the look of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Changeling,” “Doubt,” “Frost/Nixon” and “Milk.”

Those five pics landed noms in the period film category for the guild’s 2008 Excellence in Production Design Awards.

Nommed in the fantasy film grouping are “The Dark Knight,” “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” “Iron Man,” “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Wall-E.”

“Burn After Reading,” “Gran Torino,” Quantum of Solace,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The Wrestler” received mentions for contemporary film.

On the television side, “Mad Men” was nommed for single camera series along with “Pushing Daisies,” “True Blood,” “The Tudors” and “Ugly Betty.”

“In Treatment,” “30 Rock,” “My Name Is Earl,” “The Office” and “Weeds” are the half-hour single-camera nominees.

“The Big Bang Theory” was joined by “How I Met Your Mother,” “Rules of Engagement,” “Little Britain U.S.A.” and “Two and a Half Men” as nominees for multicamera series.

Television movie or miniseries nominees are “The Andromeda Strain,” “John Adams,” “The Librarian: The Curse of the Judas Chalice,” “Lone Rider” and “Recount.”

In the category of awards show, variety, music or nonfiction program, the nominees are “The 2008 Emmy Awards,” “The 80th Academy Awards,” “MTV Video Music Awards 2008 From Hollywood,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union.”

Besides the individual awards that will be handed out, art directors will fete George Lucas with the guild’s kudo for contributions in cinematic imagery. Lifetime achievement honors go to production designer Paul Sylbert.

Final voting by ADG members is Feb. 12. The guild’s awards gala will be held Feb. 14 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, hosted by thesp Bryan Cranston.
