Alcon boards ‘Dolphin Tale’

Smith set to write, direct drama

Alcon Entertainment’s aboard to produce and finance inspirational drama “A Dolphin Tale,” with Richard Ingber co-producung

Charles Martin Smith (“Air Bud”) will write and direct the film, to be released via Alcon’s output deal with Warner Bros.

Project’s inspired by the true story of Winter, an injured dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap. Everyone around the dolphin was motivated to save her by creating a prosthetic tail.

Alcon secured the rights from Clearwater Marine Aquarium and David Yates. Banner’s “The Blind Side” has become its biggest grosser, with more than $130 million domestically, and its Denzel Washington vehicle “The Book of Eli” will open Jan. 15.

Charles Martin Smith’s acting credits include “Never Cry Wolf” and “The Untouchables.” He recently wrote and directed “Stone of Destiny,” starring Charlie Cox, Kate Mara and Robert Carlyle, for Arclight Films.Smith’s repped by APA.
