Academy taps Bruce Cohen for gala

Producer to put on inaugural Governors Awards

Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen has been tapped to produce the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ inaugural Governors Awards gala, set for Nov. 14 in Los Angeles.

The gala, the product of recent rule changes, is where testimonial awards — Thalberg, humanitarian and honorary kudos — will be presented instead of during the live Oscarcast.

“I want the evening to be an elegant, legendary night that the honorees and attendees alike will remember and cherish,” Cohen said.

The Acad’s board of governors will select the 2009 honorees in a meeting next month.

In other Acad-related news, a former exec branch governor, Robert Rehme, was named prexy of the org’s educational and cultural branch.

The Academy Foundation — responsible for conducting the Student Academy Awards and the Nicholl Fellowships screenwriting competish — also elected actors branch governor Annette Bening as VP, along with film editor Donn Cambern.

Those re-elected include Sid Ganis as treasurer; Bruce Davis as exec secretary; and the newly voted in Acad prexy Tom Sherak as secretary.

The foundation’s trustees are elected annually.
