Executive director's contract extended 2 years

The Visual Effects Society has extended the contract of executive director Eric Roth for two more years through December 2011.

Roth has presided over rapid growth for the org, which has doubled its membership and launched several branches outside the U.S. since he became executive director in 2004.

The org now comprises 1,800 members in 20 countries.

Sony Pictures Imageworks prexy praised Roth, saying he “has been instrumental in expanding the program both here and abroad and advancing the reputation of the Visual Effects Society.”

Roth said the VES is working to carry this message to the entire entertainment industry: “Almost every kind of visual entertainment uses some kind of visual effects. It’s becoming more and more central to be able to create the vision that everyone wants to see onscreen.”

Roth said the VES will have more events in 2009, some large and some small, including a major conference tentatively planned for fall.

The org is not a union or guild and does not have collective bargaining power but does advocacy and education.
