International execs keen to tap into local production

In terms of attendance, organization and budget, Ventana Sur will be the biggest Latin American mart ever.

Running Nov. 27-30 in Buenos Aires, it will showcase 300 Latin American productions, screening 50 completed movies and films in progress under the moniker Primer Corte. A digital library hosts 250 more.

More than 200 non-Latin American distributors, sales agents and TV acquisition execs will attend, plus 50-plus sales agents and distributors from Latin America.

The mart is expecting around 500 participants, says Cannes Marche director Jerome Paillard. Ventana Sur is a joint venture of Argentina’s film institute, Incaa, and the Marche.

France, Europe’s film sales powerhouse, will see strong representation, as almost all of its outfits will be repped in Buenos Aires.

Match Factory, Bavaria Film Intl., Imagina Intl. Sales, Latido and DeAPlaneta are other Euro companies that have all signed on.

High-profile distributors include Belgium’s Cineart, France’s EuropaCorp, Diaphana and Haut et Court, Spain’s Filmax and Sweden’s NonStop.

Stateside participants include Figa, Film Movement, Lap TV, Madman, Magnolia, Maya, Montecristo, Samuel Goldwyn, Shoreline, Showtime Networks, Strand and Ondamax.

There’s a strong networking thrust to the mart as well. All attendees are lodged in Buenos Aires’ Sheraton, with meeting and screening centers close by.

In addition, Ventana Sur has struck synergies with sister events Expotoons, an animation mart (Nov. 25-28), and Doc Buenos Aires/Latin Side of the Doc (Nov. 25-27), a forum/training initiative.

Cannes Festival delegate general Thierry Fremaux will host a European film panorama featuring younger auteurs.

Rough-cut showcase Primer Corte — “a key draw,” says Memento’ Nicholas Kaiser — runs during Ventana Sur, as do two roundtables: International Sales of Latin American Films, moderated by Jason Resnick,ß and Circulation of Latin American Films Inside Latin America.

In a beta launch of a new service, Cannes Marche’s online database Cinando will allow buyers to screen the Ventana Sur library movies for two months after the event.
