Venice taps duo for jury service

Gerima, Portabella to head two section juries

ROME — The Venice Film Festival has tapped U.S.-based Ethiopian helmer Haile Gerima and Spanish avant-garde auteur Pere Portabella to head two section juries.

Gerima, whose epic “Teza” took Venice’s Special Jury Prize last year, will return to the Lido to help pick the winner of the Lion of the Future for a first work unspooling in the fest. The nod is worth $100,000, split between helmer and producer.

Portabella, who was in Venice in 2007 with “The Silence Before Bach,” will preside over the jury for Horizons, dedicated to global cinematic trends. Jury will dish out nods for best feature and docu in the section.

Portabella will also bring “Mudanza,” his 20-minute short dedicated to the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, to unspool as a special event.

As previously announced, Ang Lee will head the Lido’s main competition jury.

Fest’s 66th edition runs Sept. 2-12.
