3D reissue extended through end of October

Disney’s 3D reissue of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” has cumed a solid $22.8 million in 10 days, spurring the Mouse House to extend the run beyond the slated two weeks.

Domestic distribution prexy Chuck Viane said Disney plans an “open-ended engagement,” but the run probably won’t extend beyond Nov. 2, when the studio opens 3D performance-capture pic “A Christmas Carol” in wide release.

Landing in the No. 5 spot this past weekend, the “Toy” pics earned $7.8 million at 1,752 playdates. “Toy” twins grossed $12.5 million in their opening weekend amid tough competition from Sony’s 3D toon “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.”

Solid earnings for the double bill, which is expected to continue at some 1,200 locations, should bode well for future makeovers of Disney’s toon catalog. A 3D version of “Beauty and the Beast” is set for a 2011 release.
