Group acquires most distribution rights to film
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete.”
Deal was announced Monday by Sony and Hyde Park Entertainment.
“Machete” is the feature-length version of the trailer that originally appeared in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse.” Pic’s in production in Austin, Texas, with a cast that includes Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez and Rose McGowan.
Story centers on a former Mexican police officer who turns the tables on the masterminds who double-crossed him. Rodriguez, who wrote the screenplay, co-directs with Ethan Maniquis.
Sony worked with Rodriguez on the so-called Mexico Trilogy — “El Mariachi,” “Desperado” and “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.”
