Sony Pictures slashing 300 jobs

Studio to cut staff, eliminate open positions

Sony Pictures Entertainment is joining the ranks of showbiz companies doling out pinkslips.

The studio — which, along with 20th Century Fox, had been one of the last holdouts on significant layoffs — is slashing some 300 jobs. The reductions will be made through a combination of cutting staff and eliminating open positions.

A spokesman for the studio declined comment. There’s been speculation that the cuts may be heaviest in the studio’s international units.

In January, Disney-ABC TV cut 400 jobs, and Warner Bros. axed 800 employees. Viacom slashed 7% of its workforce in early December, with Paramount losing some 100 jobs. The next day, NBC Universal announced 3% cuts, or 500 staffers, worldwide.

Over the past two years, Sony has cut a number of positions from its Imageworks division but had left the studio’s other divisions largely untouched.
