Pic stars Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough
LONDON — Helen Mirren and Pete Postlethwaite have boarded helmer Rowan Joffe’s “Brighton Rock,” joining the previously announced Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough.
Pic is an adaptation of Graham Greene’s classic novel “Brighton Rock,” about a young gangster who marries a waitress to keep her quiet after she sees him commit murder. Greene’s novel was previously adapted into a 1947 film starring Richard Attenborough and Carol Marsh.
The new project will go back to the original source material rather than the film for its inspiration, but it will be set in 1964 rather than the book’s original 1939.
U.K. distrib Optimum Releasing is exec producing the project with backing from its French owner, StudioCanal. Paul Webster is producing for British indie Kudos, with BBC Films as a co-producer.
Optimum topper Will Clarke and head of production Jenny Borgars receive exec producer credits.
Optimum is making a concerted move into production. “Brighton Rock” is the first project greenlit from its development slate. Lensing on the $10 million-$12 million pic will start this October.
Optimum will release “Brighton Rock” in the U.K., while StudioCanal will distrib in France and Germany. Its international sales arm will handle remaining foreign territories.
