Columbia falls for Garelick

Writer will also direct, Moritz to produce film

Columbia Pictures has acquired an untitled romantic comedy pitch from, Jeremy Garelick, with Garelick to pen the screenplay as a directing vehicle for himself. Deal is in the seven-figure range.

Neal Moritz will produce through his Original Film banner.

Garelick, who co-wrote “The Break-Up” with Jay Lavender, said the comedy is about what happens to the relationship of two male best friends and when their children fall in love.”It’s what happens when your best friend’s son knocks up your daughter,” Garelick said.

The comedy is inspired by Garelick’s own romance with his wife, Samantha. Their parents were best friends, and Garelick added the pregnancy part as a comedic device.Garelick broke into the business as assistant to helmer Joel Schumacher and shot second unit on the director’s film “Veronica Guerin.” He left Schumacher when he and Lavender sold their first script, “The Golden Tux,” to Dimension Films and Todd Phillips.

Garelick just teamed with Phillips to rewrite the Jon Lucas/Scott Moore-scripted comedy “The Hangover,” after he and Phillips teamed to write “Murray at Large,” a “Fugitive”-like comedy that was sold to WB in a pitch. The Phillips-directed “The Hangover” will be released by WB on June 5.

Garelick also wrote a pilot for 20th Television and Principato-Young called “Monkey Business,” which he described as a “Scrubs” set in the world of investment banking.
